5.Three way tie between their scenes in the 1.11/1.12 two parter, 2.07, and the post crash scene in 2.17, and I don't technically feel like this is cheating to include a three way tie because I love all of these for one unified reason, that reason being AW YES OLD MARRIED COUPLE SCENES. This is one of the best things about being an A/O fan to me, that you get all these different sides of their relationship to explore and appreciate; you have angst, you have playfulness, you have a working partnership, so on and so forth, and this one is consistently the most hilarious, when they’re that bickering old married couple who loves each other, sure, but are frequently a second away from strangling each other at times too, and over the stupidest little things at that. And my favorite thing is that when you throw in a third character to actually witness them being like this, like with Ahsoka in 2.17, it’s clearly what they see too- just look at her incredibly amused, kind of fond and exasperated all at once expression as she just shakes her head while she watches them in this kind of 'Eh, what else can you do when they get like this but let it crack you up’ way.

4.The Citadel Arc. There are three arcs in the series that have a lot of AO moments I love, so I’m going to group those arcs together as one 'moment’ each, or else this would quickly turn into a top 20 comprised purely of moments from those three arcs, lol.

The big draw of the Citadel arc to me, in terms of this ship, is the focus on the strength of their partnership. The fact that once they’re separated we get these cuts back and forth of the two of them discussing how they know the other will just shift to Plan B, a plan nobody else in the party seemed to realize existed but the two of them, back and forth shots of both of them joking about the other being late, somehow managing to banter across a distance up until they’re reunited and even in the middle of being shot at, outnumbered, and having their escape route cut off, the first thing Obi-Wan does is tease Anakin for indeed being late while Anakin just smirks at him. Anakin saying to leave distracting the dogs to him, to which Obi-Wan only has to clear his throat for Anakin to correct himself by adding 'And Obi-Wan, of course’, an exchange I love because Obi-Wan’s response is so 'We’re partners, genius, that means you don’t get to volunteer for the crazy dangerous assignments without me being at your side’ and the way Anakin quickly adds the 'of course’ seems to me like he just knew Obi-Wan would be there with him and took it for granted- and not in the negative sense of the term, just that he knows they’re a team and that’s how they work and he just assumes it goes without saying.

I’m also a huge fan of the Anakin/Ahsoka/Obi-Wan relationship, and basically view Anakin and Obi-Wan as Ahsoka’s dads and do my fair share of squealing over that familial dynamic, something this episode is also great for. Obi-Wan shamelessly shooting Anakin that smug grin over him having to be 'the bad guy’ with Ahsoka due to his overprotectiveness, Obi-Wan cutting into Anakin and Ahsoka’s talk to rescue Ahsoka and point out Anakin's hypocrisy to him, welcoming her aboard while she looks like she’s so touched she may cry, Obi-Wan and Anakin racing over together as if to help Ahsoka only to see she rescued Tarkin on her own, Tarkin remarking as he walks past them she’s been well trained, the two of them asking Plo about whether or not Ahsoka lied together, meaning at some point on the trip home they took time to themselves to discuss what to do about her.

Also, one more thing I’m a sucker for- 'we’ speak. It’s one of the most coupley gestures I can think of, and Anakin and Obi-Wan do it twice in these episodes. First when Rex is telling Anakin he’s never been carbon frozen before, without Obi-Wan even being a part of the conversation Anakin answers that 'it’s a first for US’ too instead of just speaking for himself, and then later, instead of just asking himself as her Master, Anakin tells Plo 'WE were wondering…’, including Obi-Wan even though, considering he’s not Ahsoka’s Master, he doesn’t need to be a part of this conversation at all. Also, if you take a moment to think about how this habit of theirs leads to the heartbreaking scene in the ROTS novelization where Obi-Wan pulls the 'we’ speak with Bail and Yoda, speaking about himself and Anakin, then remembers that Anakin died protecting the temple (or so he thinks) and has to correct himself and make it 'I' instead of 'we’, I think this suddenly becomes an incredibly heartbreaking little gesture.

3.The scene where they go to make peace with the Talz in Trespass. Especially the shot of Anakin chuckling as the Talz bearhugs Obi-Wan- stars in my eyes every time I see it. Because it’s not a typical 'as your best friend it’s my privilege to laugh at your expense’ kind of laugh- there’s so much warmth and adoration in it, and so much fondness in how Anakin is taking in the fact that Obi-Wan can go negotiate with a supposedly hostile group that he doesn’t even speak the language of and an hour later not only have come to peaceful terms, but find himself being bear hugged by new friends.

But that entire sequence is really fantastic. All Anakin seems to know about the Talz is that they’ve attacked their troops before and seem aggressive now, and with his impulsiveness and the defensive greeting they get from the Talz, it would have been easy for him to assume this had to end in violence, but the second Obi-Wan tells him to back down he does without question, and and he just trusts in Obi-Wan’s ability to talk them through this language barrier or not- and is even so quick to join in and help by drawing the picture that represents their peaceful intentions. Which I think is so representative of how well they work together and complement each other; Obi-Wan says the right things Anakin takes the right actions- The Negotiator and The Hero With No Fear at their best together.

2.Mortis Trilogy, and lord, where do I even begin? Okay, I’m going to start with the cave scene, and Qui-Gon appearing to Obi-Wan. My personal take on Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan’s relationship is that they have a really strong dynamic of Obi-Wan being like an insecure son desperate to live up to his dad’s expectations, who always worries he’s just not good enough. I believe it’s in one of the special edition Jedi Apprentice books that Qui-Gon himself says Obi-Wan’s greatest flaw is that he cares too much about pleasing Qui-Gon. In the council scene in TPM, Obi-Wan just stands there and takes it and even supports him as Qui-Gon unintentionally humiliates Obi-Wan by basically shoving him out the door for a new apprentice, sending Obi-Wan on his way with 'competent’ being his glowing assessment of him. And Obi-Wan admits himself later that he was hurt and jealous and angry about everything happening with Anakin, but he still didn’t talk back to Qui-Gon about any of it. And considering Obi-Wan was still his Padawan and still just finding himself as an individual when Qui-Gon died, in a way Obi-Wan is likely to have blamed himself for, I think it’s still ingrained in Obi-Wan on some instinctual level that Qui-Gon is his Master and it’s Obi-Wan’s place as padawan to follow his lead. So if there’s anybody who could theoretically hold enough sway to make Obi-Wan question Anakin, it’s Qui-Gon, which is why him being the one to appear to Obi-Wan is a brilliant choice (note- I do personally assume that was really Qui-Gon and not a manipulation like Anakin’s vision was, though I know it’s open to interpretation). I’m not saying Qui-Gon says anything negative about Anakin or is trying to make Obi-Wan doubt him because he doesn’t and he’s not- he still seems to believe in Anakin himself, in fact. But with all of the above in mind, I think it’s still very significant that the last thing Qui-Gon says to Obi-Wan is a warning that if Obi-Wan has any doubt whatsoever about Anakin being The Chosen One, anything but a force for good, then this is a very dangerous place for him to be, because if there’s anyone who could even unintentionally plant that seed of doubt in Obi-Wan, it’s Qui-Gon.

But the next day, Obi-Wan is the one to reassure Ahsoka that no matter what Anakin may have seen, just as they did, he wouldn’t be deceived easily. And then when The Father tries to make Anakin choose between saving Obi-Wan or Ahsoka, Obi-Wan is the one to tell Anakin to use the unknowable, magnificent amount of power the planet contains. Right there is exactly what Qui-Gon’s warning was about- Anakin is more powerful in the Force than any other Jedi as is, and now he has access to a mind blowing amount of power. If Obi-Wan has any doubt about him whatsoever, that’s a terrifying prospect, because what Anakin could do with that much of the Force fueling him on is just unimaginable. But he doesn’t have any doubt whatsoever. First he tells Anakin to save Ahsoka as a precaution, because he knows how it’ll kill Anakin if there really is no other way out and he can’t save them both, so Obi-Wan takes it out of his hands and makes the choice for him, trying to make sure there’s no possible way this can end with Anakin overwhelmed with guilt and hating himself for not being able to save Obi-Wan. But then he’s the one to present this third option to Anakin, believing Anakin will use this power to save them and then be able to let it go, showing absolutely no fear that this could end badly, with Anakin losing himself in it- which I find particularly meaningful since I think, especially after their interaction with the Son, Obi-Wan seems to get that the planet is equal parts light and dark side of the Force and he knows Anakin is going to have to conquer the latter as well by tapping into this power.

And I am pretty much obsessed with the shot of Anakin with his eyes closed, taking a breath and gathering himself as the camera zooms in on him while Obi-Wan is in the focus of the background as he tells Anakin to use the planet’s power. The shot represents to me so clearly how Obi-Wan is Anakin’s center, his strength, how his voice is what grounds Anakin and helps him pull himself together to do this.

And then again with specific shots- Anakin saving Obi-Wan and Ahsoka is in it’s own way very frightening. Anakin is clearly in control of himself, but all the same, the planet is the force and Anakin is the one forcing it to change, these people are the force and Anakin is able to bring them to their knees. It’s one thing to know Anakin is more powerful than anyone else he’s ever seen or even heard of, but it’s another thing entirely to witness it in such an awe inspiring display. And that’s why I love the moment where Anakin is holding The Son and The Daughter in the air, having brought on night and caused the entire arena to light up, and then they specifically have a shot of Obi-Wan staring at him so intently, refusing to look away. We know Obi-Wan believes Anakin is the chosen one, while Anakin questions and doubts that, but this moment makes it very clear that he is, and while it probably terrified Anakin to realize there’s no fighting it anymore, particularly considering the breakdown he had over the title in the Jedi Quest books, Obi-Wan’s not scared at all. And I actually think this moment parallels that scene in JQ I just mentioned really beautifully- as Anakin is essentially having a panic attack over his destiny, Obi-Wan is able to pull him out of it with his vow that he won’t leave Anakin no matter what happens, and I like to think in this moment he’s so careful not to look away because he needs Anakin to know that’s still true- that he’s still with him 100%, no fear, no questions.

Then in 3.16, my favorite bit is of course the A20 scenes at the end, specifically this moment. I raved about why I love it in the tags of that post so I’ll spare you repeating it all here, haha, but basically, DAD FEELINGS, SO MANY DAD FEELINGS.

And finally, 3.17. Usually Anakin is the one in the more protective role, so I like getting a glimpse of it the other way around here with Obi-Wan repeatedly demanding to know where Anakin is, what the Father has done to him, flipping out when he realizes Anakin has gone to confront the Son alone and demanding to know where to find him, then in his own eloquent and restrained, composed Obi-Wan sort of way, basically telling the Father to go screw himself when he tries to keep him from Anakin. I also love when we see Obi-Wan being protective of the relationship he and Anakin share, (ie. Wild Space when he goes on the defensive when Padme accuses him of not loving Anakin, then loses his temper and yells at her for her 'stupid and childish’ POV when she implies Obi-Wan will hurt him while Padme never will) and that’s what this moment is really- Obi-Wan flat out refuses to believe he and Ahsoka have no part to play in Anakin’s destiny or that he can’t help him, even with the Father himself saying so, and he’ll be damned if he doesn’t try.

Then, there’s the visions of his future that the Son gives Anakin, which contain a little detail that I find hugely significant, though it may be my shipper goggles clouding my judgment. But here it is- while everything else he shows Anakin is exactly what happens- Sidious using the force lightning, Anakin killing younglings, Padme begging him to stop as he force chokes her- the glimpse he gets of Obi-Wan is very different. The way it actually happens, Obi-Wan delivers the 'You were my brother line’ when the fighting is over, looking and sounding utterly heartbroken. The way Anakin sees it in the vision, Obi-Wan is actively attacking him and looks and sounds absolutely furious. CURIOUS, NO? Considering how often in the novels in particular Anakin expresses worry about Obi-Wan being frightened or disgusted if he sees the darkness in Anakin or knows about some of the things he’s done like the tusken raider slaughter, I think this was an intentional manipulation on the son’s part- because he’s showing Anakin his worst fear being realized in that moment. I also find it interesting~ that the last thing Anakin hears before he falls to his knees in despair, what the Son saves for last as his final blow, isn’t his wife telling him through tears that he’s going down a path she can’t follow, isn’t himself calling her a liar or any of his accusations towards her, not even Sidious informing him of her death- it’s himself screaming I hate you to Obi-Wan.

And just a couple more little moments in the episode- one, the exchange between Obi-Wan and the Son after Obi-Wan discovers Anakin is now under his sway- the Son smirking at Obi-Wan and telling him 'He’s mine now’? Lol, okay, wow, that is not at all sexually charged or carrying the clear implication that the Son thinks of Anakin as having been Obi-Wan’s up until now. And then there’s the fact that when Ahsoka comes to get Obi-Wan his focus is on getting to Anakin in order to 'rescue him’- not stop him. Obi-Wan is so sure that this isn’t really Anakin and he just needs to be saved, which Obi-Wan has every intention of doing- and when he and Ahsoka find him in his right mind, Obi-Wan has no trepidation over the fact that Anakin allowed the Son to attack him last time they saw each other and was so lost and turning against the Jedi- he just wants to know if Anakin is alright.

And y'know what else is interesting to me? After the Father takes Anakin’s memories of the visions the Son gave him, Anakin doesn’t seem to remember what he did, but Obi-Wan must. And it makes me wonder if in ROTS, now that we know that’s the second time Obi-Wan’s had to see Anakin’s eyes burning sith yellow as he turns against him, if all Obi-Wan could think about was how this is the second time now that Anakin has chosen the dark side over himself and Ahsoka, and maybe he just doesn’t want to be saved, which is why Obi-Wan doesn’t truly try to do so- he’s just too broken to see the point in him trying to pull Anakin back out of the darkness when Anakin has reached out for the dark side instead of to him twice now.
